Chapter 7

The Alchemitorium stood against a bruised evening sky – a relic of a civilisation long past, its crumbling facade both imposing and foreboding. Bioluminescent vines clung to weathered stone, their eerie glow flickering over ancient pillars, as though the building itself held secrets too weighty to forget.

“The Alchemitorium,” Alaric said, stepping forward with a measured tone. "Aureate Circle architecture – unmistakable."

Knife ready, Maren followed, scanning the shadowed crevices without pause. The amulet against her chest pulsed with a faint, rhythmic beat, growing heavier as they approached. “Designed to hold something significant… or dangerous,” she observed, her gaze lingering on the spiralling carvings framing the entrance. A quiet reminder – time was against them.

Inside, the Alchemitorium lay in shadow, faint light from twilight and glowing vines barely pushing back the gloom. Alaric stooped, retrieving an old lantern half-buried in dust. Swift, practiced motions brushed away the grime; he struck a flint.

“This should serve us,” he murmured, a small, steady flame chasing away the gloom.

Maren ran her fingers over the deep carvings lining the walls, now illuminated. Old symbols, their meanings half-lost – spirals, crescents, and sunbursts, smoothed by centuries of decay.

“Containment,” Alaric murmured, lifting the lantern. “Transformation. Healing.”

“More than just worship. Maybe there's some truth to the rumours.” She glanced at him.

“I have no doubt.” Alaric’s voice was carefully neutral. “This wasn't just a sanctuary. They pushed boundaries here – dared to dream of reversing the Hollowing.”

Liora’s laboured breaths quickened as Selene clutched her tighter. “We’re wasting precious time,” she snapped, desperation sharpening every syllable. “If there’s any chance to save her—”

“We’ll find it,” Maren interjected, her gaze darting to the gaping entrance. Fresh boot prints in the dust stirred unease. “But let’s not assume this place is empty. Ruins harbor surprises… the wrong kind.”

Selene's focus remained on Liora’s pale, feverish face, lips pressed into silence. Lantern held high, Alaric stepped into the entry hall; the others followed.

Footsteps echoed against the cavernous walls as they pressed deeper. The lantern’s shifting light fell upon murals and carvings – remnants of a civilisation that had battled decay with desperate determination.

“Brilliant, in their own way,” Alaric said, his tone almost clinical. “Obsessive, perhaps. Their containment runes, experimental treatments… they had no choice.” His gaze lingered on a particularly intricate carving – a complex spiral interwoven with a crescent moon – for a split second longer than necessary, a flicker of recognition in his eyes.

Maren’s reply was quiet, laced with guarded scepticism. “People push boundaries for many reasons. Not all lead to salvation.”

Selene’s voice cut through the murmurs. “If there’s any chance they left a cure…” Her eyes met Maren’s, pleading. “We have to find it. Quickly.”

Her plea hung in the thick air. The group advanced down a narrowing corridor, the scent of earth and mould mingling with their palpable urgency. The Alchemitorium's ancient walls urging them onward, time ticking away.

An opening on their right drew Alaric's attention. He gestured. “The centre holds their primary research site… if the legends are true.”

Maren caught it – the depth of Alaric’s knowledge.
